In numbering the generations in America it was found necessary to represent 
the subject of the record as number one (although not actually numbered in the 
record), and his parents as number two, since under this system the lineages of 
both father and mother, seldom of equal number of generations, always conjoin 
in their common number (2). Thus, the subject is represented as number one 
(although not actually numbered in the record); his parents are always 
numbered 2; his grandparents in both lines of descent are always numbered 3; 
his great grandparents in both lines of descent are always numbered 4; 
and so on, to the earliest known ancestor in America, who is given the highest 
number, which shows the number of generations in America in each line of 
descent.
