Earl of Perth, New Jersey Expedition, 1684
by Lee Morse
James Drummond, fourth Earl of Perth, was one of 24 proprietors of a large tract of land in northern New Jersey. He sponsored an expedition in 1684 to colonize the land. Among the members of this expedition were
William Sutherland, David Sutherland, and Robert Southerland. None of these men are known to have been related to each other, but there is much speculation that they were brothers. William settled in New York, David in Maryland, Robert in Virginia. |
